Ala'ilima-Daley to serve on WIAA football seeding committee

Posted

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced Cascade High School principal Elia Ala'ilima-Daley would once again serve on the organization's Football Seeding Committee.

In a May 30 press release, the WIAA explained the committee will be tasked with seeding the 16 teams in each WIAA Classification for the State Football Championship, except for the 1B Classification, which will have eight schools.

The WIAA used an application process to select qualified candidates from around the state, and the committee will have no bearing on which teams qualify for the state tournament. Teams will advance to the state bracket through the WIAA District allocation system.

Once the field is determined, the committee will rank and seed teams in the first round of the bracket based on their performance throughout the regular season and playoffs.

In the first year of the committee’s existence, three sub-committees were formed, each overseeing two WIAA Classifications. For the 2019 season, the organization will implement six sub-committees for each classification.

Ala'ilima-Daley, who served on the committee in 2018, joins South Whidbey's Paul Lagerstadt, Montesano's Dan Winter, LaCenter's John Lambert, La Salle's Cody Lamb, Freeman's Jerry King, former coach Bill Marsh and media representative Ryland Spencer for the 1A Classification.

The committee is scheduled to meet  on Aug. 19, and again at the conclusion of Week 10 to assign state seeding positions.
