Cascade football faces Eastmont, Quincy in scrimmage

Posted

The Cascade High football team got an early start to their 2019 campaign on June 13 with both varsity and JV teams playing scrimmages against 4A Columbia Basin Big 9's Eastmont and 2A Central Washington Athletic Conference's Quincy.

The scrimmage was a culmination of the first two weeks of spring football practice. Cascade began spring football on June 3, with many athletes donning helmets and jerseys for the first time since November 2018. The team had three days of practice before transitioning to full pads.

Kodiaks Head Coach Dominique Coffin felt the scrimmage went well for Cascade. He explained the team focused on bringing more energy as they went full team against Eastmont before going back-and-forth with the Wildcats and Quincy.

"It was about what we expected," Coffin added. "The coaches were pretty happy with how we did."

Coffin said Cascade's offense, led by returning quarterback Cole Warnaca performed well throughout the scrimmage. Warnaca fired off some good passes during the day, including a 37-yarder.

He noted the offensive line had a couple of players scattered, which left some open holes for defense, but they also showed aggressiveness at the line.

Coffin noted that Cascade's defense did a good job of swarming the opposing offense. During their first series against Eastmont, the Kodiaks shut down the Wildcats offense in seven plays.

"We also managed to get some JV guys into the (varsity) rotation, and it was good to see them step up," Coffin added.

Although the scrimmage is over, the summer preparation for Cascade is just beginning. The Kodiaks will travel to Cheney for Eastern Washington University's football camp, June 19-22.

"That will be the next test," Coffin said. "The scrimmage allowed us to see where were at, and the coaches were pleased. When they come to EWU, we'll expect more from them. We're excited to see where them team is during (the camp)."
