Cascade golfers compete in Chelan, girls tournament

Posted

The Cascade High School Kodiaks traveled to Chelan for their second Caribou Trail League match on April 11.

The Chelan boys defeated Cascade 386-427.

Isaac Cortes led Cascade with a 95, 13 strokes behind medalist Miles Grossberg of Chelan. Michael Whitehead hit 108, Austin Curry shot 111, Gavin Dwyer had 113 and Ledger Parrish recorded 126.

On the JV side, Chandler Pulse shot 71 and Ryan Totman hit 76.

"The Kodiak boys are still trying to find their identity," Head Coach Randy Alexander explained. "Isaac Cortes is No.1 , but after that, it is awfully close to who is No. 2, No. 3, so on and so forth. Each week different golfers have made the makeup of the Kodiak scoring team. That’s not a bad thing to have. We are highly competitive group, (and) each guy wants to play well and 'score.'"

Alexander noted Parrish had scored well during Cascade's match with Omak while Whitehead had a standout performance against Chelan.

"Next week it could be Gavin Dwyer or Austin Curry," Alexander added. "We’ll just have to see who shows up. Most of  these boys all can shoot around the same scores, it’s just that the game of golf can truly bring the best or worst out in a golfer. You just have to keep plugging away and keep working hard."

Alexander said JV golfers Totman and Pulse will soon be competing for the sixth varsity spot as they gain more experience.

In the girls' match, Cascade finished with a score of 534. Chelan forfeit the match due to lack of players.

Emma Halseth shot 108 to earn the top score and medal in the girls' division, beating Chelan's Kaylin Boykin by two strokes. Emma Nielson finished with 113 while Natalie Craig hit 131. Carly Ostrem, the newest Kodiak golfer, shot 182.

Alexander explained he normally does not move JV players to varsity so quickly, yet he saw the progress Ostrem was making to improve her golf game.

"I approached her last week and asked if she was up for the occasion and she said she was," Alexander said. "She has been working hard, like all of the team, to improve all of her game."

Ruthie Biebsheimer shot an 81 and Laura Lyman hit 90 to round out the JV scores.

"All these girls are making great strides in their golf game," Alexander said. "The scores will come down, it just takes time and lots of practice."

After Chelan, the Kodiak girls traveled to East Wenatchee on April 12 to compete in a tournament at Highlander Golf Course.

Halseth finished 10th in the small schools division and led Cascade with 105. Nielson shot 115 while Craig hit 117.

"I felt we did pretty good considering we haven’t been on the golf course too awful much," Alexander said. "But these girls are working hard on their games and the scores will come down, I guarantee it."

Cascade travels to Brewster to compete in the Gamble Sands Invitational on April 17-18.
