Cascade softball defeats Wenatchee

Posted

The Cascade High School softball team took a brief stop on their road to a Caribou Trail League title on April 17 in a nonleague game against Wenatchee.

Even with some miscues with base running and fielding errors, the Lady Kodiaks softball team picked up a 9-5 nonleague win over the Lady Panthers.

Truh Merriman kicked off Cascade’s momentum by drilling the ball past the center field fence for a home run in the first inning. Down 2-1, the Lady Panthers added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a narrow lead. Madison Hardy’s two-RBI single in the fourth inning gave Cascade a 4-3 lead.

Kaija Lovelady’s single and Renee Lambert’s double added two insurance runs for the Lady Kodiaks. Merriman’s single in the sixth brought in two more runs. Cascade capped their scoring with Kayla Bittle’s single in the bottom of the seventh.

Lambert led Cacscade at the plate after she went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two doubles. Bittle was 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Sarah Paulson earned the pitching win, allowing three five runs on three hits.

“We played a good, solid team, they hit the ball and we had a few errors that made things difficult,” Head Coach Todd Gilbert said. “To go out and beat a good team like that is a good day.”

Cascade (7-1 Caribou Trail League, 12-3 overall) will host Okanogan on April 23 in what will be a battle for first place in the conference standings. Both teams split a March 23 league doubleheader with the Lady Kodiaks winning game one and the Bulldogs emerging victorious in the nightcap.

Gilbert said the Wenatchee game showed him the team needs to focus on base running while drilling down on fundamentals.

“We know we’re facing a good team (in Okanogan) and we have to come out and play solid defense,” Gilbert added.
