Cascade tennis team opens season at Ephrata

Posted

The Cascade Tennis Team, perhaps the most impacted by the lingering snow, played their season opener on March 16 at Ephrata. The girls won 3-2. Cascade picked a win from number one singles, Taylor Kelly, 6-0, 6-0 and the doubles teams.

Number one doubles Katie Schiefelbein and Brooke McDevitt won 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Number two doubles, Alexandra Barragan and Dorothy Espinosa won 6-2, 6-2.

“Taylor handled her opponent easily. She tried new strategies and executed them perfectly. Katie and Brooke took their time wrapping up their match because the second set went into a tie breaker,” said Head Coach Joey Johanson. “They showed they have the nerves to win tight matches by putting the tiebreaker away easily.”

Johanson said the most impressive match of the day came from the number two girls doubles.

“We needed them to win to get the girls’ team win and they handled the pressure amazingly and put the Ephrata team away with ease. Marie Dickinson and the Number 3 doubles girls lost in tough matches, but got the varsity experience they need,” Johanson said.

The boys lost 5-0. Johanson said the boys battled hard with many newcomers getting their first varsity experience.

“It seemed like every singles player and doubles team improved in the second set, which is encouraging to see as a coach. Finn Johnson had a great match at number 1 singles and many games came down to deuce. Finn is nursing a broken hand and still has a cast on. His game should continue to improve as the year goes on,” Johanson said. “The match of the day on the boys side was the number 2 doubles. Thalles Nunes and Levi Larson almost split sets with Ephrata after losing the first set 2-6. They showed grit and determination and took the second set down to the wire.”

The Kodiaks played at Pateros on March 20. Results were not available before press time. On Saturday, the team plays at the Selah Doubles Tournament. Next Tuesday, they open league play at Chelan.
