Cascade volleyball team puts on good showing at Sheridan Classic in Spokane

Posted

Cascade Head Coach Marni McMahon likes to challenge her team with tough matches. The Kodiaks found plenty of tough matches against 4A schools in the Sheridan Classic in Spokane over the weekend. Cascade went 6-1 in the tourney, finishing fifth out of 62 teams.

On Saturday, Cascade beat 4A Kennewick, 25-21, 25-17. They also beat 1A Freeman, 25-17, 25-22. Then they beat the Mount Spokane JV 25-15, 25-20. They lost to 4A Mead, 25-18, 25-10. Mead ended up in the championship match.

“They are very good and dominate in many areas of the game. We were not there mentally in this match and made a lot of unforced errors. It wasn’t what we were capable however. They are very strong and I’m not surprised they were in the championship,” said Cascade Head Coach Marni McMahon.

Cascade then beat 4A Tahoma, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12.

“Tahoma was a strong team. Big hitters - but we were able to run a faster offense. They struggled with Megan Evans on the backside and Ashely Ross in the middle,” McMahon said.

Cascade then had a rematch with the team that knocked him out of the Sun Dome Tournament, 4A West Valley, beating them 30-28.

“It was such a competitive high level match. Analia Vasquez and Makena Ala ‘ilima Daley did a great job leading and siding out for us. Analia went on a 5-0 serving run to finish the set. Makena and Analia had 8 kills and 7 digs each. Megan Evans 3 kills and 9 assists. Abby Brown 10 assists,” McMahon said.

Cascade then beat 4A Cour D’Alene, Idaho 25-23 for fifth place.

“It was a great day. Lots to continue to work on especially serving but these girls played some great teams. The competition in the Platinum Bracket was outstanding. It was good to finish on a high beating West Valley and Cour D’Alene, Idaho. I’m pleased with the play of our new Libero Maddie Schiefelbein. Maddie really came through in big moments,” she said.

On Sept. 26, Cascade played at Cashmere, winning 25-13, 25-11, 25-17.

“The Kodiaks gave away too many points on unforced errors. However, finished the match in three straight sets. This makes our match record 7-0, not counting tournament wins, “ McMahon said.

Makena Alailima Daley and Analia Vasquez combined for 27 kills. Maddie Schiefelbein added 11 digs. Ashley Ross had 6 kills and 2 aces. Abby Brown and Megan Evens combined for 38 assists.

Cascade hosted Omak (2-1, 6-2) on Oct. 3. Results were not available before press time. On Thursday, Cascade hosts Chelan (2-0, 6-1). Next Tuesday, the Kodiaks are at Okanogan (0-2, 3-3).
