Kodiak boys basketball win back to back

Posted

The Cascade boys basketball team had a loaded week for games. Despite, the tough loss against Okanogan on Tuesday, December 4, the boys rallied to play back to back with two non-conference teams later in the week. The Kodiaks took on Cle Elum Thursday, December 6 and then Friday, December 7 went on to play Waterville. Both games ended with a win for the team and put some momentum into the boys season as they tackle the upcoming week against conference teams.
Cle Elum was the second team to be played that week and ended up being the first win of the season. The Kodiaks didn't waste time and leaped into the first half eager to put points on the board. In the first quarter, Cascade led with 11 points while Cle Elum was close 9 points but Cascade propelled ahead, scoring 16 points in the second quarter and Cle Elum only 5.
"It was a good first half against Cle Elum. We went into the half at 27 points," said head coach Paul Fraker.
In the final half, Cle Elum came back with some momentum. They managed to rack up 9 points in the third quarter and 17 in the fourth quarter. Regardless, Cascade kept them at bay with a total of 24 points in the last half. The final score was 51-41.
"We let off the gas a little bit and they came back for a competition in the fourth quarter," said Fraker. "But we did real good ending the game."
Some notable performances by Ethan Burpee and Issac Cortes. Burpee managed 17 points and made six out of seven free throws during the game, according to Fraker. Cortes did a good job as interior on the defensive end and was a huge help with the team's hot start at the beginning of the game.
After winning by ten points, the team traveled to play Waterville the following day, December 8. The score remained relatively close the majority of the game. Both teams put up points in the first quarter, but Cascade really gained ground in the second quarter with scoring 12 more points. In the third quarter, Waterville gained their footing and put up 12 whereas Cascade only put up 11. By the final quarter though, Cascade won with 11 more points on the board.
"It was a pretty even game the whole way," said Fraker.
Fraker said Hans Schlyer scored 17 of the total points and Cortes 10 points while also doing a great job blocking shots. The team ended up winning again, 38-32.
Both games ended with a win for the team and put some momentum into the boys season as they tackle the upcoming week against conference teams.
"It was nice to get a victory after a tough loss Tuesday (against Okanogan)," said Fraker. "Lets us know where we stand."
