Kodiak golfers enjoying play on their home course, finally

Posted

The Cascade golf team played the first of five straight home matches on April 24 against Okanogan. The Bulldogs only had four boys, so only the boys’ match could be scored. Tim Wells was the medalist as the boys won 390-428.
Wells’ 81 was his best round of the year. Freshman Isaac Cortes shot his best ever score, 93.
“His game is starting to really come around hopefully the scores will keep coming down. Stefan Zucktriegel shot 99, Gavin Dwyer 117 to complete the scoring. Ledger Parrish 123, Michael Whitehead 131, and Austin Curry 138 finished up the boys scoring respectively,” said Head Coach Randy Alexander.
Alexander credits assistant coach Ken Baumann for coaching up the boys.
“We have three weeks to shine up our game for districts and then the state qualifier. It will come down to Cascade and Chelan for the league and district title. The Chelan team whacked us pretty good on their course a couple weeks ago,” Alexander said.
The girls’ team played 18 holes with top scorer Maddie Hontou sitting out with a knee strain. Emma Halseth had a personal best 96 to win medalist, beating Jacelyn Bain by one stroke. Emma Nielson had a 126, Natalie Craig 136, and Anlyn Flake, played her first 18 holes of the year, had a 139.
“We have seen all the teams in the CTL and we are the front runners at this time. Chelan is the only team that is able to score against us. We went up there shorthanded a couple weeks ago and didn’t score. We saw them up at Gamble Sands last week and beat them by 60. So we will see,” Alexander said.
On April 26, Cascade hosted Omak. The boys won 392-461. Wells shot 87 to take medalist honors.
“It was a hard fought day for Tim, he had problems getting off the tee and struggled the whole round. Hats off to him though, it could have been worse. He worked hard all day, am sure he slept well that night or maybe he didn’t sleep well, he may have lost sleep thinking his game needs extra work this late in the season,” Alexander said.
Zucktriegel shot 91, Cortes 99, Gavin Dwyer 115.
Omak only had three girls, so not enough to score. Hontou was medalist with an 89, which is her best round at Leavenworth. Bain shot 99, Nielson 110, Craig 133 for a 411 score.
“It was a good day. Some kids still have some work to do but most are focused and preparing for the end of the season qualifying tournaments. Alta Lake on May 7 is an all CTL match on the course where the state qualifier will be held. We will be ready for that,”
Cascade hosted Chelan on April 30 and Warden on May 1. Results were unavailable before press time. A CTL practice round is set for May 7 at Alta Lake in Omak. The 1A District 6 golf tournament is May 14 at Alta Lake. Ian Dunn can be reached at 548-5286 or editor@leavenworthecho.com.
