Lady Kodiaks drop CTL contest to Chelan

Posted

The Cascade High School girls basketball team returned to Caribou Trail League play on Jan. 23 with a 68-33 loss to Chelan.

The Lady Goats opened the game with a 17-14 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Kodiaks managed to build some offensive momentum as the two teams traded the lead throughout the first eight minutes.

Cascade struggled to get their offense going in the second quarter as Chelan’s defense only kept them to 10 points, including eight from Kaija Lovelady. Chelan’s defense continued to hinder Cascade’s offense in the second half as the Lady Kodiaks only scored seven points in the third quarter.

In the final frame, Dorothy Espinosa scored the final two points for Cascade. She finished with 10 points for the night as did Lovelady. The Lady Kodiaks’ defense kept Chelan to only seven points.

Head Coach Dane Lewman said Cascade played a solid first quarter, but could not maintain their performance for the rest of the game.

“We got away from what we do best,” Lewman said. “We were trying to look at the refs to make some calls that they didn't make, and we got outside of what we should be doing. We could be play competitively with this team (Chelan), but we didn’t tonight."

The Lady Kodiaks (1-9 CTL, 2-15 overall) will have a day to rest before they face the Lady Goats again on Jan. 25.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to play the way we should have tonight,” Lewman said. “The nice thing is we don’t have to wait 2-3 weeks to play them again. Hopefully the girls will be mentally prepared on Friday.”
