WIAA cancels regional wrestling tournaments

Posted

The Cashmere High School wrestling team, as well as other mat squads across the state, will have to wait another week to wrestle.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced it had canceled all boys and girls regional wrestling meets due to weather conditions and in the "interest of safety and equal opportunity for all participants."

WIAA staff and event managers are developing 32-competitior brackets for the Mat Classic XXXI tournament. The first matches will begin on Friday morning, Feb. 15. The organization will release the details of the schedule on Feb. 11.

The Bulldogs had seven wrestlers qualify for the Caribou Trail League-Northeast A League regional event, which was scheduled for Feb. 9 in Omak.

Whelan Gillikin won the 145 pounds district title to advance to Omak. Myles Chapman, Aaron Guerrero and Duke Odenrider all took second in their weight classes to punch their tickets to regionals, as did Erick Rodriguez, Blake Brown and Baz Lloyd.

Maddie Fadenrecht took fourth in the 120-pound division of the Girls Region 4 Sub-Regional North tournament to qualify for the Regional 4 tournament.
