New Leavenworth PUD Substation

Posted

The Chelan County PUD has been in the process of finding a new location for a substation in the Leavenworth area. The existing location located off Chumstick Highway is nearing capacity. The PUD is evaluating three different locations: one is MEND property located on Titus Road, one is Leavenworth City property and the third is the 3.1 acres next to Chumstick Highway in Leavenworth. The Chumstick property was also recently purchased by the PUD when the owners became aware of the PUD’s interest in finding a site. This site has overwhelming factors in its favor not the least of which is a at least a $1 million up to $2M savings due to lower cost for real estate, transmission, access and groundwater remediation. Because the site is closer to existing transmission lines, few structures would be needed lessening the impact and visual footprint for the community. A Leavenworth community focus group has also recommended the Chumstick site. The PUD Commissioners will be presented with feasibility reports on the sites in early July.

It seems incredible that the PUD commissioners would not select this site as the best use of our rate payer dollars. Please make your opinion known by using the PUD public comment form on their website or by emailing teka.sellers@chelanpud.org or calling 509-661-4294. I also urge the PUD Commissioners to select the Chumstick Site.
