Apple Maggot Burning

Posted

In Northwest Washington, there is no shortage of apples. With businesses like Crunch Pak, designated for pre-cut apples and events like Apple Days in the neighboring Cashmere, apples are a staple in the local communities.

However, with that, there is also a need to keep a control on pests like Apple Maggots. The City of Leavenworth falls into the realm of having to follow the Apple Maggot Quarantine.

At the Sept. 11 City Council meeting, Council member Mia Bretz reported that the City of Leavenworth had been approved for the necessary burn permit for the Apple Maggot Quarantine, which was obtained through the Department of Ecology.

On Oct. 3, the City of Leavenworth released a public notice regarding the Apple Maggot prescribed burn.

The prescribed controlled burn will be on city owned land that is next to the Mountain View Cemetery. It will occur Oct. 10

The areas near the burn site will be temporarily restricted and roadways may be blocked for safety purposes.

The burn will be done under the oversight of Chelan County Fire District #3, according to the notice.
