Photo by Carol Forhan Strong winds caused the top half of a power pole to break at approximately 1:35 today. Live powerlines then dropped to the ground and caused the Fire Department to evacuate businesses in the area.

Strong winds have toppled trees, broken power poles and downed power lines in Leavenworth. As a result, most businesses south of Highway 2 are without power and are currently closed.

Cascade Medical Center is operating on emergency generators and is open.

Strong winds are projected to continue until late this evening.

PUD and fire officials are on scene and have blockaded several streets where live electrical lines are on the ground.

The outage occured about 1:30 and best estimates from officials on 14th street were that it would take several hours to restore power.

The Echo office is one of the closed businesses and phones for the paper are down as a result of the power outage.

The power outage caused the traffic lights at Highway 2 and Chumstick highway to shut off causing traffic to back up on Highway 2.
