Rock Fest returns to Leavenworth for 20th anniversary

Posted

Rock climbers and mountain lovers will flock to Leavenworth May 24-26 for the annual Rock Fest event. The event, hosted by the Leavenworth Mountain Association, is putting on a plethora of activities for its 20th anniversary.

This year's Rock Fest headquarters is at the Icicle Center for the Arts. Camping will be found at Spromberg Canyon Meadows. The venues do not allow dogs and officials ask owners to leave their pets at home. If a dog is needed for aid, organizers ask the animals be kept on a leash.

One of the featured events is the Der Klettergarten Bouldering Competition. During the event, competitors will climb as many routes as they can between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The top scorer in each category will earn fame and prizes.

The cost to participate in the event is $35. Divisions are divided by 8-12 years and 13-18 years, for boys and girls. Climbers will need to register for the event before the event, or by 8 a.m. on May 25.

Folks can attend one of the event's climbing clinics. The Northwest Mountain School returns to host clinics in the morning and afternoon. Each three-hour clinic focuses on an aspect of climbing and range from introduction to rock climbing to specialized clinics.

The cost for each clinic is $50 and attendees must register before May 24. To register, visit the LMA website

There are also free presentations and lectures in The Responsible Climber Series. Each lecture is focused on educating folks to be better and responsible climbers. The Cascadia Conservation District will present a lecture on how to keep water fresh and clean. Folks can also learn about the Wenatchee River Ranger District's program.

Kurt Hicks will present the Washington Anchor Replacement Project. The American Alpine Club will host a beerside chat where folks can learn how they can be active in the climbing community.

Vertical World is hosting several competitions on the festival grounds at Tierra Canyon, including Furniture Bouldering, Pull up Contest, and Timed Boulder Pinch.

Rock Fest will also feature two special guests, Will Stanhope and Brittany Goris. Stanhope is a professional climber and ACMG Rock Guide based out of Squamish, British Columbia, Canada. Goris is a lifelong climber and works at Seattle's Girls Rock Mat, an organization that runs STEM-based summer camps for young girls. She also works as a graphic design for the organization and climbs full-time.

Camping prices are tent camping for one night is $20, weekend camper or RV overnight package at $50, weekend tent camping at $30, main event at the Icicle Center for the Arts $10.

All proceeds from Rock Fest will benefit the Leavenworth Mountain Association. The funds will be used to install and upkeep temporary toilets up Icicle River. The association also works on stewardship projects throughout the year.
