Storm causes dangerous rise in water level at Eightmile Lake

Evacuations might be necessary

Posted

After the thunderstorm last night, Eightmile Lake is now two feet above its level from last Friday, according to Icicle Irrigation Manger Tony Jantzer. The nearly century old dam at the lake is in danger of failing, due to the rapid melt of snow above lake. The Jack Fire last fall burned the watershed above the lake, causing this danger.
An emergency declaration has been issued. Jantzer said the lake is now going over the front wall by about a foot, and there is currently 2.5-to-three feet of water going over the eroded dirt portion of the dam.
"We are now at level two of our emergency action plan. If the lake goes up by another three feet, we will likely call for evacuations," Jantzer said via May 9 email.
The Echo will update this story as necessary.
