Philip R. (Phil) Brunton

 

Philip R. (Phil) Brunton, 90, a life-long resident of Leavenworth, died Saturday evening, Nov. 4, 2017. Phil had resided at Mountain Meadows Senior Campus for the past four years. Prior to that he was an orchardist living on 70 acres on the North Road for 63 years. 

He was born in Wenatchee, May 25, 1927 to Clive and Cora (Brammell) Brunton. They subsequently moved to Leavenworth where Phil graduated from High School in 1945. He chose not to attend the graduation ceremony enlisting in the Navy where he served until August 1946. 

Phil attended Perry Trade School (now Perry Technical Institute) in Yakima after serving in the Navy when he met Velma Specker at a church function. They were married Feb. 2, 1950 in Ellensburg and moved back to Leavenworth in 1951. In December, 1954 they adopted John (then 3) and his sister Shirley (then 4). Phil was an active member of Chumstick Grange, Methodist Community Church and Leavenworth Senior Center. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. He had a tremendous love for the outdoors, especially hiking, camping, and fishing in the high lakes. Phil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Dodie Brunton of Portland; two granddaughters, Erin and Allison Brunton, and a brother, Delbert (Del) Brunton of Overland Park, Missouri. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Velma, his daughter, Shirley, and a second brother, Max Brunton.

A private burial was held at Evergreen Memorial Park in East Wenatchee. Arrangements were handled by Ward’s Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Wards Funeral Chapel, 303 Pine St. in Leavenworth on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017. The service will begin at 2 p.m. Those who wish may make a memorial in Phil’s name to Mountain Meadows, 320 Park Ave., Leavenworth, WA 98826 and/or Leavenworth Senior Center, PO Box 1033, Leavenworth, WA 98826.
