Barry William Ravanal

Barry William Ravanal, 82, formerly of Leavenworth, Wasington, died peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer on Jan. 24, 2018 in Shelton, Washington.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Mary Ravanal, his sons Christopher (Kelley Carlin) Ravanal of Colma, California, Ryan Ravanal of Gig Harbor, Washington, stepson Robin Eurich of Sarasota, Florida, grandchildren James Ravanal and Elizabeth Ravanal of Colma, California, his sisters Patricia Bradley of Barefoot Bay, Florida, Lorraine Jaccoma of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and Dolores (Dennis) Postl of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Virginia (Smith) Ravanal, siblings Val Tate, Louis Ravanal and Frank Ravanal, Jr., and his first wife, Judith Lango.
Born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1935, Barry was an accomplished high school athlete, dancer and artist.
Following graduation from Northern High School, Detroit, in 1954, he served in the United States Army. After his discharge, he attended Wayne State University and the San Francisco Art Institute while working as a display manager for several department stores in the Detroit and San Francisco Bay areas.
He loved buying and selling antiques. He owned an antique store in Oakland, California in the 1960s and traveled throughout the mid-Atlantic states, specializing in Amish farm items. After moving to Seattle in 1971, Barry continued to buy and sell at local antique shows.
Barry worked at Todd Shipyards as a sheet metal welder/mechanic for 25 years. After his retirement in 2005, he and Mary moved to Leavenworth, Washington, where he spent time hiking, painting, gardening, snow blowing, fixing machinery, buying drill bits and cramming garage sale items into his Little Shed of Horrors. In 2015, they moved to the wet side of the mountains to be closer to family.
Barry was an accomplished artist and often painted in oils and watercolors. He was a witty individual with a dry sense of humor who loved his family, classical music, and was passionate about sports (although he was a fickle fan who preferred a well-played game over loyalty to a particular team).
The funeral was held Feb. 2, 2018 at St. Edward’s Church, Shelton, Washington, with a reception that followed at the church. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery at a later date. Condolences can be sent to www.mccombwagner.com/obituaries/Barry-Ravanal.
