Posted

Vernon (Vern) F. McKinney,93, of Leavenworth, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2019 at his home, with family by his side as he wished.  Vern was born to Ralph and Nora McKinney in Wagner, South Dakota on October 1,1925.

He served honorably in the US Army during WWII and the Korean war. He received 4 medals while working as a Bulldozer operator. In 1955, Vern married his eternal companion Anita. They were married for 64 years. In their early years they enjoyed dancing the Jitterbug together at the American Legion Hall in Downtown Peshastin. He loved and adored her. Leavenworth has been their home for over 62 years. Together they raised 3 boys and fostered many children.

Vern was a hard working, reliable man. He spent most of his adult life in the seat of a D7 Dozer fighting fires, working with the Forest Service and logging.  He built many roads and bridges in Chelan County that are still used to this day. He loved to fish and teach his grand kids how to fish. His family was his whole world, he always wanted more time together, "come back and see us" he'd always say!  His smile was contagious, his laughter was ceaseless but his selflessness outweighed it all. Vern's love and endless generosity stretched far beyond the front porch. Everyone was always welcome at his house and there was always room to stay.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. A man who built lasting relationships, whose words of wisdom and steady hand in guidance will forever run deep in our hearts!

Vern was proceeded in death by his parents; his brothers:Pat and Gerald, his sister Jody Fassnacht and Son Bob. He is survived by his wife Anita, brother Mike,of Burien,Wa;sons: Andrew, of Sedro Woolley, Wa, James (Rita) of Snohomish,Wa; four grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Vern was deeply loved by family and friends and will forever be missed.

Celebration of life will be at a later date.
