Cascade wrestling remains undefeated in league competition

Posted

The Cascade High School wrestling team added two more wins under their belt on Jan. 3 at a Caribou Trail League double dual. The Kodiaks defeated Chelan, 39-33, then picked up a 61-12 victory against Cashmere.

Against Chelan, Cascade jumped to an early lead after Austin Curry’s 14-1 majority decision over Gilberto Mora and D'Andre Vasquez’s pin over Alvaro Arteaga. The Goats went on a five-match winning streak before Hunter Reinhart added points for Cascade with his forfeit win. Juan Martinez scored a first-period pin over Logan Oules and Axel Martinez won his match via forfeit.

With the score tied 33-33, Adian Arceo clinched the victory for Cascade after he scored a pin in the first period over Carlos Venegas.

In the match against Cashmere, the Kodiaks scored their first points after Cole Warman picked up a majority decision victory, and Jose Valdez scored a pin over Iziah Oropeza. Eric Rosario, Arceo, Curry and Juan Martinez also picked up pins while Daniel Sandoval earned a 7-4 decision against Aaron Guerrero. Isai Claros, Hunter Reinhart, Axel Martinez and Jesus Sandoval all won their matches via forfeit.

Cascade wrestling head coach Jesus Sandoval said he was happy to earn both league wins. He added that the victory against Chelan marked the Kodiaks' first league win against the Goats since he took over the Cascade wrestling program.

"They've had the run of the league in the last 2-3 years," Coach Sandoval added. "It was nice to finally get a win over them. I remember the first time facing them (years ago), when the match was over I looked at the score, and it was 60-6."

Even with the victory over Chelan, Coach Sandoval said he is not overlooking the Goats as the Kodiaks will face them again on Jan. 17. However, he said the win will help build the team's confidence in the coming weeks. He is also happy with the progress the team has made during the season.

Cascade travels to Sultan, Washington, to compete in the Sky Valley Invitational on Jan. 5.
