CHS Track Season Off to Strong Start

Posted

The track and field season for Cascade High School looks to be an illustrious one. “This year’s track and field team is the largest I have ever coached at Cascade,” raved head coach Bill Davies. “We have over 50 athletes and more than a dozen seniors.”

The team has attended three meets thus far in Ephrata, Bridgeport and an Eastmont Invitational for the top athletes. There’s been strong showings in many events for both girls and boys.

Davies shared some highlights. “Seniors Lauren Muscutt and Maddie Gillespie have been outstanding in their leadership to all the new freshman. Lauren has been running exceptionally well. She currently leads the state in the 800 meters with a 2:17.” Muscutt is a strong mile runner as well.

“Maddie is running well in both the 300 hurdles and the 100 hurdles. Another senior, David Ising, has been strong in the throws, especially in the shot and discus.”

The team has depth that includes students from all grades. “There are many new and promising athletes this year,” said Davies. “Junior Kaston Dillion and his sister and freshman Teyva Dillion are both running the 400 and look to be in contention for league.” Kaston Dillon has also shown talent in the 200 and discus, and Teyva Dillon will continue to improve in the high jump.

“Junior Kai Lewman is our jumps and 100-meter man,” said Davies. “He currently leads the league in the long jump with a jump of 18' 8". I believe he will jump over 20 feet at state. Junior Edie Walker has been pole vaulting very well. Last week she vaulted in the premier meet in Eastmont placing fifth overall.” Walker is also a strong 100m runner.

The distance runners are strong, given many of the runners attended state for cross country in the fall. “Senior Owen Bard leads the league in the mile and 2 mile with junior Aiden Tuttle just steps behind,” said Davies. “The boys should go one and two in districts. The girls distance crew includes senior Ava Northrup and junior Tillie Leroy. Both girls are running strong and continue to improve.”

The athletes benefit from a coaching staff with decades of cumulative experience. Staff includes Davies as head coach, Eric Wulfman, distance coach, Carl Haberberger, sprint coach, Omar Stubblefield jumping coach, Cesar Mendoza throws coach, and Julia Armstrong as pole vault coach.

“Our next meet will be in Brewster on Tuesday April 12th with fun co-ed relays. The kids really enjoy this meet,” said Davies. “We will then compete at Cashmere Saturday, April 16th against some of the best 1A schools in the state. I look forward to seeing all of the athletes perform and continue to improve.”
