Cross Country teams wrap up a successful season

Posted

Cascade High School's boys cross country team took 5th place at State! The top 16 teams from each division plus fast individuals from teams that didn't qualify, totaling 155 runners, competed on a hilly 5k (3.1 mile) course at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday. The seven member Cascade boys varsity team were in first place through two miles, but they couldn't quite hold on and ended up in 5th. By previously run times we were ranked fourth going into the race. We knew we had a chance at winning, but everyone would have to have exceptional races, and I doubt there's ever been a group of boys who tried harder. We came so close - five out of the seven boys had their best races of the year, but that wasn't quite enough to take first.

Junior Landon Davies led the team with a 5th place finish in a time of 16:10, a new personal record (PR) and thus Cascade school record. Sophomore Derek Richardson probably had the best race of the day, finishing next in 14th place in 16:27, a 22 second PR. Sophomore Owen Bard was next in a season best 16:34 which put him in 19th place. Sophomore Jacob Redman just keeps getting faster, beating his PR from the league meet a week ago by 8 seconds to finish in 61st place with a time of 17:25. He was followed by junior Jerome Jerome, sophomore Lien Hagedorn, and senior Avery Jacobson.

Since six of the seven are returning, and there are a couple of fast 8th graders coming up, we have high hopes for next year. Running never ends, so lots of work ahead of us.

Cascade's girls team took 3rd at the league meet and thus didn't earn a team berth at state, but qualified two individuals, junior Zoe McDevitt and freshman Tillie Leroy. Zoe ran very well, finishing in 42nd place with a time of 20:27, and Tillie finished in 136th place with a time of 23:18. The girls team is also planning to work hard in the offseason to compete at the state meet next year.
