Reichert support SAFE

Posted

Congressman Reichert, please cosponsor the SAFE Act and do all you can to stop horse slaughter.

Horse slaughter plants have been closed in the U.S. for the last ten years, and we need to continue to keep them closed, as well as prevent the transport of horses abroad for slaughter in Canada and Mexico.

More than 80% of Americans disagree with the practice of horse slaughter, nor is the meat consumed in America. Therefore it is an easy way to conserve American tax dollars by not supporting this industry from reopening.

Additionally, American horsemeat is potentially hazardous to humans. Throughout a horses lifetime it is given any range of medications that improve their health and performance, but are strictly forbidden for animals intended to enter the food chain. Exposing foreign consumers to a likely toxic product is not a wise risk to take.

Finally, the existence of horse slaughter enables reckless overbreeding by providing a profitable outlet for irresponsible owners. Prohibiting slaughter and the transport for slaughter, will force breeders to produce sustainable numbers each year, and will help to humanely prevent unwanted horses.

Please call Representative Reichert at (202)-225 - 7761 and urge him to help end horse slaughter and support the SAFE Act.
