Tax the rich

Posted

The seismic rumblings of the American continent these days are not earthquakes. They are the millions of our forebearers turning over in their graves at what we have done with America.

Who among the pioneers of our culture would not be astonished at today’s concentration of wealth into so few hands, and our inaction in the face of it.

While the excessively rich occupy themselves in heartless accumulation, the rest of us occupy ourselves in mindless jealousy. We ogle the Bugattis, diamonds, yachts, gated mansions, bribes to top universities, and think, “How cool is that.”

The top one hundredth of one percent (the .01%) are real problem kids. They make several millions of dollars a year. That’s a lot of Louis Vuitton bags and Sotheby’s art that could be used to feed and house people instead.

The top 1% have as much total wealth as 90% of Americans, and the top eight wealthiest families (six in America) have as much wealth as one half of the entire human race combined, says Robert Reich.

Instead of worshipping the rich and hating ourselves, wouldn’t it be better to actually tax more of that wealth and income for public use?
