Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

A new festival to enliven Leavenworth

Posted

Carlos Bernal, Chef and Owner of Pavz Tacos is working to bring the Dia de los Muertos festival to Leavenworth. The festival is an ancient one traditionally practiced on the ninth month of the Aztec calendar. Originally it was a month long event but in the 20th Century has been condensed to 3 days consisting of the 3 days of the dead, Halloween (Oct. 31) All Saints Day (Nov. 1) , and the day of the Dead (Nov. 2).

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico as an opportunity for families to reconnect with family members who have died. Bernal envisions a three week festival beginning around Halloween. Last week a group of artists and professional models came to Leavenworth to prepare a video to begin building support and promoting the event. Bernal said his first job is to get approval from the city.
