LWSC Junior Nordic Team perform well at Stampede ski races

Posted

The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club (LWSC) Junior Nordic Team boasts 120 members. They practice from the fall to March and range in age from five to 19. Part of the program’s mission is to help the skiers develop the skills and fitness to perform well at local and regional races. There have been several races recently.
The Stampede ski races, as part of the Washington Nordic Cup race series, took place on Feb. 4 and were hosted by the Kongsberger Ski Club at Cabin Creek, Washington. LWSC skiers gained a lot of top performances. Caroline Menna won the 1k overall. Ian Eifert and Alice Farrell won overall in the 2k. Greer Swoboda won her age division, girls 12-13. In the 5k race, Rory Swoboda won girls 14-15, and Gabe Wulfman won boys 18-19.
Racers face their stiffest competition at Junior Qualifier races (which qualify skiers to advance to Junior Nationals in March). Six LWSC skiers attended the Mount Bachelor Junior National Qualifier on Jan. 27-28. These particular races brought together, not only Pacific Northwest ski clubs, but also a large showing of skiers from California. Hadassah Lurbur placed fourth in the classic race for girls 16-17. Stella Johnson had the third fastest qualifying time on the skate sprint day for girls 14-15, and Derek Richardson won both the skate and classic races for boys 12-13.
LWSC Nordic team members dominated at the Chicks on Sticks race (1/27/18) on the Icicle River Trails, which served as a fundraiser for the Wellness Place in Wenatchee. Annika Peterson won the 1k overall. Bella Fox was the overall winner of the 4k race, and Eli Fortney won the boys 10-13, Dash Haberberger won the boys 9 and under, and Naomi Tveten won girls 9 and under. In the competitive 8k race, Haley Loewen won girls 10-13, Ian Eifert won boys 10-13, and Kian Reid won boys 9 and under.
