Alphorn Club is training ground for local preteens

Posted

Lederhosens, dirndls and Alphorns are some of the elements that intertwine to make the authentic Bavarian atmosphere that's planted in Leavenworth. With its eye catching long horn and talented individuals behind the wooden instrument, the alphorn is a mesmerizing feature for locals and tourists alike. The alphorn interest even trickles down to some of the younger Leavenworth residents - the Alphorn Club is now offered at Icicle River Middle School.
In October 2018, school administrators encouraged Thomas Tilton, Alphorn Club advisor, to form the junior version of the local ensemble, Leavenworth Alphorns. Tilton is a member of the Leavenworth Alphorns and uses his expertise to help shape the little ones into finding their own groove with the alphorn.
"I love that we've come from moose calls to music," said Tilton. "It's very gratifying to see kids learning these new skills. Our students take pride in being alphorn players."
Projekt Bayern provided alphorns for the middle schoolers and Leavenworth Alphorn members extend a helping hand by teaching and mentoring the younger players. The school administration was very supportive of a collaboration between the community's well known instrument of choice and the middle school students.
"Our principal, Mike Janski, even attended a few meetings. He's not bad on the alphorn!" said Tilton.
The club doubles as an opportunity for the middle school students to have hands on learning on a unique instrument and a chance to be involved with their peers.
"Clubs, in general, offer a great way of strengthening students’ connection to school.  Alphorn Club offers participants an opportunity to learn a unique musical instrument and to work together to produce music," said Tilton. "I think it is fair to say that most of our members experience a sense of accomplishment, while having a lot of fun."
Alphorns are a familiar sight during Leavenworth community events and now some of the town's preteens have a chance to join in on the fun thanks to the somewhat new club. The club practices every Thursday afternoon to prepare for their debut in the community. According to Tilton, the club is striving to make their public appearance sometime in May.
"We are currently working on building our skills and learning some pieces," said Tilton. "Leavenworth Alphorns will be hosting the third annual Northwest Alphorn Workshop from May 24th to the 26th. Our middle and high school players will be invited to participate."
