Peshastin-Dryden cubs took the stage

Posted

Instead of hearing knocks at the door mid-dinner to listen to well meaning but loud Christmas carolers howling "Jingle Bells", the community opted to gather in the Cascade High School for the Peshastin-Dryden Winter Concert. The performance was filled with in tune, albeit charmingly high pitched, seasonal music. It occurred Thursday, December 8 at 6 p.m. for those who braved the cold to see the students.
"The Cascade High School's large gym has best accommodated our audience numbers (around 600)," said Cathy Merril, 5th year as music specialist for Peshastin-Dryden and Alpine Lakes. "My first year we were in Icicle River Middle School gym with standing room only."
Despite being in the foreign high school setting, the Peshastin-Dryden cubs managed to fill the big, Kodiak, shoes with no hiccups. The kindergarten, first and second graders kept the audience of peers, parents and proud fans (i.e. teachers) amused and entertained with their performance.
" I hope the variety will keep the audience entertained & smiling," said Merril. "I personally enjoy seeing the contrast of the age levels as they musically progress."
This is not only a well anticipated event but also a well rehearsed one. The students have been practicing for the spotlight since October, when they see Merril for their once a week alloted time.
"The kids will enjoy sharing their songs, but probably are most excited and nervous about having an audience and dressing up," said Merril. "Once they get there, they realize they are part of something big."
While some sang along merrily, others slapped their hands on instruments and most wiggled along to the beat - it seemed all of the Peshastin-Dryden students were harmoniously enthralled with their concert.
