WENATCHEE — The North Central Washington Audubon Society will launch a new speaker series next month with a presentation by renowned naturalist, author and photographer Dennis Paulson focused on the lives of Pacific Northwest shorebirds.

Paulson's lecture, Birds of the Wind: The Lives and Times of Northwest Shorebirds, will explore the natural history of shorebirds, including their feeding behavior, migration patterns and breeding ecology. The presentation will also highlight species likely to be encountered during fall migration in Washington's interior.

A longtime researcher and educator, Paulson earned his doctorate from the University of Miami and later served as director of the Puget Sound Museum of Natural History at the University of Puget Sound. He has authored more than 75 scientific papers and 10 books focused primarily on birds and dragonflies.

The presentation will be offered at two locations:

  • July 21, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Jack & Edna Maguire Conference Center on the Wenatchee Valley College campus.
  • July 22, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Winthrop Barn in Winthrop.

According to the organization, the new NCW Audubon Speaker Series is intended to bring scientists, conservationists, naturalists and environmental educators to communities throughout North Central Washington to promote understanding of the region's natural heritage. Both events are free and open to the public.

The North Central Washington Audubon Society serves Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan and Ferry counties. More information is available at ncwaudubon.org.
