Back-to-back SAR calls highlight risk as hiking season returns

Posted

CHELAN COUNTY — Two search and rescue (SAR) missions were completed over the weekend as spring hiking activities pick up throughout the valley.

On April 19, Chelan County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said it assisted a group of hikers on Sauer Mountain Trail after a hiker sustained a serious knee laceration during their descent. A responding deputy accessed the injured hiker via a nearby Forest Service Road and provided immediate first aid before coordinating with fire personnel for safe transport. CCSO said the individual received further medical treatment and is expected to recover.

Later that evening, CCSO said it responded to a 911 text from a lost hiking party near Colchuck Lake. The group included both adults and children. A responding deputy used location data provided through emergency communications and navigated challenging nighttime terrain to find the group. After several hours, the group was located and guided to safety.

“These incidents underscore the versatility, preparedness, and professionalism of the Sheriff’s Office. Capable of addressing everyday public safety needs while rapidly transitioning to coordinated search and rescue efforts when the situation demands,” said CCSO Chief Seth Buhler in an update.

Officials emphasized the importance of preparation when exploring local trails, including carrying sufficient supplies, planning for changing conditions, and allowing adequate time to complete outings safely.

CCSO added that its deputies remain dedicated to fostering “a community where safety, justice, and security are ensured for all through unwavering commitment to service.”
