CHELAN COUNTY — Brian Brett expanded his lead over acting Auditor Brandt Cappell on Wednesday as additional ballots were counted in the race for Chelan County auditor.
Brett received 9,327 votes (60.55%), while Cappell received 5,912 votes (38.38%). Both candidates will advance to the November general election.
Cappell was appointed acting auditor following the retirement of longtime Auditor Skip Moore and is seeking election to continue leading the office. His campaign has emphasized election integrity, financial oversight and customer service.
Brett, a certified public accountant and retired fire chief, is challenging Cappell for the office.
Brett said Wednesday he was thankful for the backing he received in the primary election and looked ahead to the general election campaign.
"I am very grateful for the support in the August primary election," Brett said. "I aspire to carry this momentum into November for the opportunity to serve as Chelan County's next auditor."
Cappell struck a measured tone after Tuesday night's initial returns, saying there were still many ballots left to count and that he would continue focusing on the work of the auditor's office while voters decided the race.
Washington will continue counting ballots received by Election Day throughout the week before certifying the election.
