LEAVENWORTH — The City of Leavenworth is seeking the public's input on transportation safety and improvements through the Leavenworth Transportation Safety Survey.
Survey takers will be able to pinpoint areas of the city and urban growth area (UGA) where they have had close calls for collisions, or where they feel unsafe walking, biking, driving. According to the city, the data will provide a more comprehensive picture of priority areas than looking at collision data alone. They can also rank the safety of each transport mode on the streets, with an option to explain their reasoning.
Survey feedback will contribute to the development of a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Safety Action Plan for the city, which is aimed at reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The plan aims to identify a set of safety projects and strategies based on community input and collision data, with emphasis on underserved communities and equity impact assessments. Once completed, it will be used to inform the city’s choices about street design, speed limits and safety improvements.
The safety action plan is funded by an SS4A grant of $127,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), with the city contributing a $31,700 match. Established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the SS4A grant program supports USDOT’s Roadway Safety Strategy and goal of zero roadway deaths using a Safe System Approach. Over the last three fiscal years combined, the program has provided $2.9 billion in federal funding to over 1,600 communities across the U.S.
The city signed the grant agreement in March 2024. This spring, it contracted Wenatchee-based consultant Psomas to develop the plan, complete with data-driven findings, actionable policy and project recommendations, and a roadmap for implementation.
