Closures coming to US-2 through Tumwater Canyon for permanent repairs on storm damage

Posted

LEAVENWORTH —- Travelers should prepare for delays and a four-day closure of US-2 near Leavenworth as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) makes permanent repairs to sections damaged by December’s historic floods.

Starting July 7, repair work between mileposts 85-99 will cause single-lane closures, slowdowns and pilot cars and flaggers throughout most of the month. A full closure is planned starting July 13 through July 16. The mileposts span from near Coles Corner to Leavenworth, through Tumwater Canyon.

The work is for permanent repairs to the damage caused by the December 2025 storms. According to WSDOT, crews operated around the clock to make temporary fixes to an eroded stretch of US 2 outside of Leavenworth. That work was completed more than a month ahead of schedule, allowing the road to reopen to normal traffic on Feb. 10. Now, optimal weather conditions enable the crews to make more permanent repairs.

Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday, July 10. The highway will close 24 hours a day starting July 13, and is expected to reopen the evening of July 16.

The highway will return to single lane closures on July 17, with flagging and pilot cars from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The single lane closure will continue Mondays to Thursdays until the end of the month.

Because the work requires dry weather, some dates may be adjusted due to rain.

A detour will be available during the full closure. Westbound traffic will be detoured at milepost 100 onto Chumstick Highway. Eastbound traffic will be detoured at milepost 85 onto State Route 207 and Chumstick Highway.

Traffic heavier than 26,000 GVW is not allowed on Chumstick Highway, meaning freight and some other large vehicles will need to find alternate routes, such as Interstate 90.
