It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Diane Lou Norman on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee at the age of 89 years. Diane was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, on September 20th, 1934, to Herb and Donalda Hawker.
Diane attended school in Revelstoke and graduated in 1952. She worked at various businesses in Revelstoke. After a few years, she ventured out to larger and more exciting places where she worked in banking in Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto and eventually returned to her hometown.
She got involved in the local ski club and met the love of her life, Ray, at a ski club party. Revelstoke was known for its world ski jumping, and jumpers from Leavenworth would participate in the Tournament of Champions.
Ray and Diane were married on December 4th, 1964, and remained in Revelstoke for several years while Ray and his brother worked for a local logging contractor. Their son David was born in Revelstoke. In 1968, Ray decided he wanted to return to the U.S., and Diane agreed with one condition: they returned to Revelstoke every Christmas.
Diane settled into life in Leavenworth and began her involvement in the community. She attended the United Methodist Church and cherished her church family. Diane loved music, playing the piano, and singing; she had a beautiful voice. She was part of the Village Voices group and her church choir. Diane was very involved in the Autumn Leaf Festival and, in 1989, was chosen as the Royal Lady, an honor she took great pride in. Diane was also a Grand Marshall for the festival parade. She was a true ambassador for Leavenworth; and was chosen one year for the “Spirit of Bavaria” award by Projekt Bayern. One could always find her selling festival pins and placing posters at the various businesses; no one could say no to her when asked to buy festival souvenirs. Diane worked for the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and, even after retirement, volunteered to put the mailing labels on envelopes. She was also very involved in the Summer Theatre, taking tickets and greeting guests at the Fish Hatchery. When the Oktoberfest started, she could be found looking after the coffee area, sometimes working into the wee morning hours. Another event that she dearly loved to volunteer for was the Bronn Journey concerts.
Diane was very proud of what she did and was dedicated to everyone and everything. She loved people, and people loved her. Leavenworth became home, but Revelstoke was where her heart was.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents Herb and Donalda. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of almost 60 years, Ray, son Dave (Shelly), brother Don (Jo), and stepdaughter Cathy (Tom). She also leaves step-granddaughter Ane, step-great-grandchildren, Peter, Pereisa, Shanea, and many dear and special friends.
Diane’s absence will be deeply felt. The love and respect she garnered from all who knew her are testaments to her impact on our lives. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in our hearts. Diane’s family wishes to express their gratitude to everyone who has helped during this difficult time. Funeral services will be held on June 9th at 2:00 pm at the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Memorial Chapel East Wenatchee and Cashmere.
