Eastside Cycleworks invites new riders to try mountain biking for free

Posted

LEAVENWORTH —- On Aug. 26, Eastside Cycleworks will host a free mountain biking introduction event designed to introduce the sport to more riders and reduce the barriers of entry.

“Our goal is that anybody with any background can show up, hop on a bike, and have the opportunity to enjoy our favorite sport,” said Eastside Cycleworks owner Pat Donahue.

The event will provide a dozen demo bikes and helmets for beginners to use at no cost, with staff and volunteers offering basic instruction and leading short rides.

“To me, and our employees, we eat, sleep, and breathe mountain biking…It is an obsession that we have been lucky enough to discover. Cruising down a ribbon of singletrack in the woods is a very special feeling that represents freedom,” said Donahue.

However, the sport can be challenging to break into. Whether it is the cost of a bike, finding friends to ride with, or knowing how to navigate trails, it can be overwhelming, said Donahue. He hopes that the event will help knock down some of those barriers.

“The Wenatchee Valley has amazing riding that a huge percentage of the valley's population may never get to experience,” said Donahue. “Maybe some people try and don't care for it, that's fine too. The important part is that they had the chance to try it.”

The event will be held in partnership with the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club (LWSC). Eric Gullickson of Flow State Biking will also be on site to lead some easy loops and provide instruction. Gullickson is a mountain bike coach and provides lessons, offers guided rides, and hosts camps. He has experience helping new riders learn the basics of mountain biking, said Donahue.

The event will operate on a first come, first serve basis; registration is not required. Donahue recommends bringing athletic attire, a water bottle and a positive attitude, and event organizers will handle the rest. The event is for ages 12 and up. Minors will need a parent or guardian to sign the liability waiver.
