LEAVENWORTH - The City of Leavenworth will address multiple measures at its October 8 City Council meeting, including resolutions against two state initiatives and the annexation of a property for potential multifamily development.
The council will vote on Resolution 17-2024, opposing Initiative 2117. This initiative seeks to repeal Washington's Climate Commitment Act of 2021, known as the "Cap and Trade" law. City documents indicate the act has contributed $2.15 billion to the state's budget for transitioning to a clean energy economy.
Resolution 18-2024 is also on the agenda, which opposes Initiative 2109. This initiative would repeal taxes on capital gains exceeding $250,000 per year.
A public hearing is scheduled for the annexation of a 0.52-acre property at 9646 Marson Drive. Property owner Gustavo Hoyos requested the annexation, which includes adjacent Mine Street right-of-way. The proposal aims to encourage multifamily development with access to city water and sewer services.
The council will consider surplusing a 2014 SMI Snow Machine, originally purchased for $25,675 to create snow in the Front Street Park during low snow years. City staff recommends surplusing the machine due to its limited use, with a current estimated value of $12,500.
For local tourism and community projects, the council will review Leavenworth Fund grant awards for 2025. The Economic Development Committee has proposed distributing $81,165 from the Lodging Tax Grant Program and $42,757 from the General Fund Grant Program to various non-profit organizations.
The agenda includes reminders of upcoming events: a Community Visioning session on October 14 and a Community Engagement Night on October 29.
