Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge set for April 25 return

Posted

LEAVENWORTH — The 2026 Leavenworth Firefighter Challenge is scheduled to return April 25 at the Leavenworth Ski Hill, bringing firefighters from across the region to compete in a 10-kilometer backcountry race designed to test endurance and strength.

The annual event, now in its eighth year, features a course with more than 1,600 feet of elevation gain. Participants include professional firefighters and recruits competing individually or in teams across rugged terrain intended to reflect the demands of wildland firefighting.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Firefighter Challenge back to Leavenworth in 2026 for its 8th year,” said Jake Martinez, president of the local Firefighters Association. “This event not only showcases the incredible abilities of firefighters, but also builds camaraderie and connects the community with the people who serve them every day.”

The event is presented by Mystery Ranch, a manufacturer of equipment for first responders and outdoor professionals. Organizers said the sponsorship supports event operations and participant experience.

In addition to the race, organizers said the event will include activities for spectators, such as vendor booths, opportunities to meet firefighters and learn about fire safety, as well as food, a beer garden and live music.

Admission is free for spectators. Registration remains open for competitors, including fire departments, training academies and individual participants from structural and wildland firefighting backgrounds. Registration details are available at lwffc.org.

Proceeds from the event support local volunteer firefighters and the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, according to organizers.
