Leavenworth Library to host “Reframing Menopause” discussion

Posted

LEAVENWORTH — The Leavenworth Library will host a community event on Thursday, Oct. 2, focused on shifting perspectives and providing resources around menopause.

Titled “Reframing Menopause,” the program runs from 5–7 p.m. and features presentations from medical and holistic experts, as well as space for open discussion.

The evening will include a presentation by Vanessa Weiland, a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner with more than a decade of experience caring for patients experiencing perimenopause, menopause, and other hormonal health concerns.

Weiland will be joined by Heidi Bard, a yoga instructor who leads workshops and retreats that support women in managing the physical and psychological symptoms of menopause. Bard’s approach emphasizes using yoga and other holistic practices to reframe menopause as a period of growth and renewal.

The goal of the program is to empower women with information and tools to approach menopause with confidence. Topics will include understanding different stages of the journey, the impacts on physical, mental, emotional, and relational well-being, and how to talk with medical providers who may be under-trained in menopause care. Lifestyle adjustments and over-the-counter treatment options will also be discussed.

Leavenworth Librarian Hannah Kwon said the event will also serve as a gathering space for women to share and validate their experiences.

“There are a lot of myths around menopause that need debunking – that it’s all about hot flashes and brain fog, and it’s all awful and we’re just meant to suffer through it,” Kwon said. “But there is so much new knowledge emerging about medical treatments as well as more holistic options to manage symptoms.”

“And the cultural conversation has shifted to viewing menopause as a natural life stage, one in which women have the opportunity to redefine what it means to thrive in their post-fertility years,” she said. “I’m excited to gather women together to reflect on the information that’s being presented but also our own personal experiences.”

The event is free and open to the public.
