Leavenworth trails reopen after sustained storm damage

LEAVENWORTH — Leavenworth’s waterfront trails have reopened after sustaining significant damage from December’s atmospheric river event.

“The City’s waterfront trails provide equitable access to nature, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience Leavenworth’s wildlife and natural beauty. These trails play a key role in fostering outdoor recreational opportunities for the community,” said City of Leavenworth spokesperson Kara Raftery.

The floodwaters of the Wenatchee River brought extensive flooding to the city’s Waterfront and Enchantment Parks. According to city officials, the flood eroded several sections of gravel trail, displaced large amounts of woody debris and created log jam piles throughout Waterfront trails system. High winds also brought down several trees.

“At this time, we do not have an estimated cost as the full scope of necessary repairs is not yet complete,” said Raftery, adding that costs associated with trail repairs could be funded with General Funds and/or Lodging Tax.

As floodwaters retreated, the Waterfront trails system remained closed while the city assessed the extent of the damage. Since then, the city’s Parks Crew has been clearing debris and log piles, rebuilding eroded sections of trail and replacing signs and benches displaced by the storm.

While all city trails are now open to the public, some sections of the trail may be temporarily closed due to ongoing repair work. According to the city, crews are actively working near the juvenile fishing pond and interior Blackbird Island trails. There is no estimated time of completion, said Raftery.

As Waterfront Park’s trails system reopens, the city has advised visitors to look out for and adhere to current signage as conditions evolve. Additionally, the Waterfront Park restrooms remain closed for the season, which lasts from November through April.
