WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society is inviting the community to crown a little royalty this spring, not for a court but for a cause.
As preparations begin for the 2026 Washington State Apple Blossom Stemilt Grand Parade, the shelter has launched a search for a canine King and Queen to lead its parade entry, a campaign that puts the spotlight on local pets while raising support for the organization’s adoption, rescue and public-service programs.
Nominations opened Monday, March 2, and any living dog from Chelan or Douglas counties is eligible. For a $20 entry fee, owners (or friends and family) can submit a photo and a short explanation of why their dog deserves a crown.
After the nomination period closes March 20, the contest shifts to a public vote, with online ballots priced at $1 each. The top fundraisers will be named Canine King and Queen and will either walk or ride in the Grand Parade on May 2.
The winners will be formally crowned April 18 during a public celebration at Union Hill Cider Company.
The event is intentionally lighthearted, but it serves a larger purpose. The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society, founded in 1967, operates as the primary safety net for animals in Chelan and Douglas counties, caring for displaced pets, reuniting lost animals with their owners, investigating cruelty cases and connecting adoptable pets with new homes. The organization also provides low-cost spay and neuter services, vaccination clinics and pet-food assistance for income-qualified residents.
By turning the search for parade royalty into a community vote, the shelter is creating a visible and participatory way for residents to support that work while celebrating the animals that have become part of local families.
Nominated dogs will be featured on the WVHS website and social media during the voting period from March 23 through April 10. The winners will be announced April 13.
