CASHMERE — A 25-year-old Cashmere man and his mother were arrested June 14 after a disturbance call escalated into a struggle with Chelan County Sheriff's Office deputies, according to authorities.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:11 p.m. to the 200 block of Independence Way after receiving a report that Jared Soriano had claimed he was assaulted at a nearby gas station.
According to the sheriff's office, the reporting party told deputies that Soriano had no visible injuries and was inside an apartment yelling at his mother and breaking things.
Investigators said Soriano exited the apartment upon seeing law enforcement and began shouting at deputies about the alleged assault. Deputies reported that Soriano appeared heavily intoxicated and became increasingly aggressive despite efforts to de-escalate the situation.
The sheriff's office alleges Soriano approached deputies and grabbed one deputy by the neck, causing a scratch that drew blood. Deputies then took Soriano to the ground, where he allegedly continued resisting arrest, striking a deputy with his knee multiple times and attempting to bite another deputy.
During the struggle, authorities say Soriano's mother, 47-year-old Margarita Violeta Mendez, intervened and threatened to use pepper spray on deputies. According to the sheriff's office, Mendez produced a can of pepper spray and pointed it at law enforcement personnel while they attempted to take her son into custody.
Additional deputies responded to assist, and both suspects were arrested without further incident.
Soriano was booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center on two counts of third-degree assault and one count of resisting arrest.
Mendez was booked on suspicion of obstructing a law enforcement officer and third-degree assault for allegedly threatening deputies with pepper spray.
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office said responding deputies demonstrated restraint and de-escalation efforts throughout the incident.
