LEAVENWORTH — Local organizations are teaming up to host a day of celebrating outdoor recreation on Feb. 7.

The Greater Leavenworth Museum will host the Mountain Sports Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Festhalle, showcasing organizations that have and continue to play a role in promoting sustainable recreation in the Cascades. Organizer Georgia Bakke-Tull told Ward Media that the event will walk through the history and present state of local mountain recreation, with a focus on maintaining and sustaining these recreation areas.

The expo will feature a number of steward-forward participants: Mountain Sports Recreators, Leavenworth Winter Sports Club, Leavenworth Ski Hill Heritage Foundation, Leavenworth Mountain Association, Chelan County Mountain Rescue, Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, Evergreen Mountain Bike Association, and Washington Trails Association. Bakke-Tull is working on including additional partners as the event nears.

The expo’s keynote presenter, the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce, will discuss its Recreation Ambassador program, the impact of Forest Service staff reductions, and the challenges moving forward.

The Greater Leavenworth Museum is coordinating with the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, which will host a Community Winter Festival on the same day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. LINK Transit will be providing free shuttle services to and from the Mountain Sports Expo at the Leavenworth Festhalle every half-hour, said Bakke-Tull.

The Community Winter Festival at the hatchery will be hosted in partnership with the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club. Designed to introduce winter recreation to all ages and experience levels, the free event will provide guides, instruction and equipment for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The festival will also include sledding, science exploration, and arts and crafts. Those interested in participating in snow activities at the hatchery should dress for winter weather conditions.

The Community Winter Festival is hosted in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Leavenworth Winter Sports Club, LINK Transit, Greater Leavenworth Museum, Cascadia Conservation District, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, Mission Ridge, CAFÉ, Wenatchee River Institute and the Wenatchee Valley Astronomy Club.

Admission to the Mountain Sports Expo is by donation to the Greater Leavenworth Museum and Northwest Ski Museum & Hall of Fame. The event will also be selling raffle tickets for winter sports related prizes. The expo will be dedicated to Bill and Peg Stark, two hiking legends who were influential in protecting the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
