'One More Stop' patrols this weekend honor trooper killed by impaired driver

Posted

OLYMPIA — Drivers across Washington can expect extra traffic enforcement Friday through Sunday, Sept. 25-27, as law enforcement agencies hold the annual "One More Stop" emphasis patrol in honor of fallen Washington State Patrol Trooper Christopher Gadd.

The WSP and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission announced the patrols, which will involve agencies in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Gadd, badge No. 927, was killed March 2, 2024, when an impaired driver traveling more than 100 mph crashed into the back of his patrol car on the shoulder of Interstate 5 just north of Marysville. Before the crash, Gadd had messaged members of his detachment that he would meet them for a break after "one more stop," according to the WSP. He had pulled over to look for one more speeding or impaired driver.

"Not a day goes by that we don't feel the loss of Trooper Christopher Gadd," WSP Chief John R. Batiste said. "In his honor, law enforcement agencies across multiple states are working together to prevent impaired driving and remind drivers that getting home safely starts with making the right choice before they get behind the wheel."

Officers taking part in the emphasis will conduct traffic stops focused on dangerous driving behaviors, including impaired driving and speeding.

"Every driver has a role to play," said Shelly Baldwin, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. "Slow down, drive sober, and give law enforcement officers the space they need to do their jobs safely. One more safe choice can make a difference."
