LEAVENWORTH — This year’s Fourth of July holiday will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, prompting “America 250” celebrations across the nation, including Leavenworth.
A coalition of community members are organizing the America 250 Upper Valley Community Celebration, recognizing a milestone they say offers a unique opportunity to honor our shared history while strengthening community connections.
“America 250 Upper Valley Community Celebration (UVCC) is a grassroots effort to create a family-friendly fair-like celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary, by the local community, for the local community,” said UVCCC Activities and Entertainment Chair Karen Brown, in an email to Ward Media.
So far, the coalition has garnered interest and support from a number of local organizations, including a $3,000 grant from the City of Leavenworth. At this point in the planning process, the coalition is accepting sign-ups from interested participants, including general volunteers with a variety of skills, interests and abilities to assist with the overall event. The group is accepting applications from performers willing to share their talents, and nonprofit organizations or vendors wanting to operate booths, whether it's providing food or interactive, patriotic fun.
“We are also looking for families with a local history from throughout the Upper Valley who would be willing to create a “Family History” table at our History Center, and be available to interact with interested attendees during the event,” said JD Dowling, History Center Chair.
The America 250 Upper Valley Community Celebration will be a family-friendly, fair-like atmosphere. The organizers are planning an evening with games and activities for all ages, entertainment, food and vendor booths, historical and cultural displays and presentations. The night will culminate in a grand finale light show after dark.
“Our country has been distinguished from its beginning by the power of families and local organizations working hard, ultimately overcoming adversity together, striving to innovate and build prosperity and a better life for their children,” said co-organizer Mike Worden. “Please join us in better understanding our founding and celebrating our local stories of success and the freedoms that bind us all together.”
