Outdoor burn ban takes effect across Chelan County

Posted

LEAVENWORTH — A ban on outdoor burning is now in effect for the season as weather trends toward warmer and drier conditions.

As of June 1, open burning of grass, leaves, brush and other natural materials is prohibited throughout the county, including Leavenworth city limits. The use of exploding targets and incendiary ammunition (ammunition such as tracer rounds or ammunition with core material that can cause a spark when striking metal, rock or other hard materials) is also prohibited. Fireworks are banned throughout Chelan County.

The use of commercial grills and BBQs utilizing charcoal or propane are still allowed, as well as recreational campfires in designated campfire areas. However, wind conditions should be considered when utilizing approved open flames, said fire officials.

According to Chelan County Fire District #3, campfire areas should meet certain criteria to be used. All combustible material should be removed down to mineral soil in the fire area as well as the first one-and-a-half feet surrounding it. The fire area should be contained by rock, metal, concrete or any other noncombustible material. These areas should not be larger than thirty-six inches in diameter or twenty-four inches in height. Portable fireplaces or pits constructed of steel, concrete, clay or other noncombustible material are also appropriate.

Fire officials also warn that smoking materials, such as cigarettes, should always be properly disposed of in a metal or non-combustible container. They should never be discarded in vegetation or be left burning near combustible materials.

According to Chelan County officials, recreational fires in unincorporated county areas, as well as the use of charcoal briquettes, will be banned on July 1.

Questions regarding the current burn status in the Leavenworth area can be directed to Chelan County Fire District #3 at (509) 548-7711 or email: info@chelanfd3.org.
