LEAVENWORTH — The Tierra Learning Center hosted Special Olympics cross-country skiing and snowshoeing competitions this past weekend, drawing 60 athletes and 90 volunteers for two days of winter sports activities.
Participants competed in various cross-country skiing and snowshoeing races across different skill levels on the center's trails. The events aimed to promote physical fitness, confidence and social inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"It was truly incredible to see the enthusiasm and dedication of all the athletes who participated," said Meeche White, executive director at Tierra Learning Center. "Their determination and sportsmanship embody the very best of the Special Olympics spirit, and we are honored to provide a venue for such a meaningful event."
Volunteers assisted with multiple aspects of the event, including course preparation, timing competitions and providing encouragement to athletes throughout the races.
The competitions were supported by local community members, organizations and sponsors who contributed resources to ensure the success of the event.
The Tierra Learning Center regularly hosts programs that align with its mission of creating opportunities for individuals of all abilities to participate in enriching activities.
