Tierra Learning Center to host two-day adaptive racing event

Posted

LEAVENWORTH — Tierra Learning Center will host a two-day inclusive, adaptive racing event on Feb. 28 through March 1, bringing together individuals with developmental disabilities for adaptive snow sports, camaraderie and celebration.

The two-day regional competition, called the Tierra Challenge, will feature cross country skiing and snowshoe races, including relay events in both disciplines. The event will celebrate ability, determination and belonging in an environment that values participation and teamwork as much as competition, according to the Tierra Learning Center.

Organized said the inaugural event was created to continue the on-snow events that were discontinued by the Special Olympics. Three teams, with about 50 total individuals, will participate: the local Icicle Trackers, Seattle area Skihawks, and Clarkston’s Twin River.

“Designed to be accessible and empowering, the competition highlights athletic achievement while fostering connection, encouragement, and joy among participants, families, and supporters,” the organization wrote in an announcement.

The first Tierra Challenge event will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the last event starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday will have two events and an awards ceremony, which will conclude around noon.

The Tierra Learning Center is looking for sponsors, volunteers and spectators to help make the event a success. Organizers are looking primarily for volunteers to help with timing participants during the races. Those interested in attending or supporting the event can reach out to the organization directly.
