US-2 repair work, pilot car operations paused due to winter weather

Posted

STEVENS PASS — Emergency repair work on US-2 near Stevens Pass will be put on hold Wednesday due to winter weather, pausing pilot car operations that have been in place from milepost 58-71.

Without an active work zone, the highway will be open to normal traffic flow from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The road will still close at 6 p.m. between Stevens Pass summit and Coles Corner (milepost 64-85). WSDOT said conditions would be reassessed on Thursday. If the contractor is able to resume work, pilot car operations will also resume. If the road is still too snowy to complete repairs, WSDOT will open the road again at 6 a.m. Thursday without a pilot car.

US-2 through Tumwater Canyon remains closed with Chumstick Highway as a detour. Drivers should be prepared for winter travel, including traction tire and chain requirements, and are reminded that the mountain pass can close for many reasons, including spin outs, collisions and avalanche control.

Motorists should check WSDOT’s real time travel map for current travel conditions before departure.
