OLYMPIA — The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is accepting applications for its Master Hunter Permit Program now through Aug. 15, inviting skilled and ethical hunters to join a statewide network of certified volunteers who support wildlife conservation and hunting heritage efforts.

The Master Hunter Permit Program, administered by WDFW, currently includes more than 1,200 certified master hunters. The program is designed to foster lawful and ethical hunting while promoting volunteer service in areas such as landowner relations, private land access, conservation projects, and resolving human-wildlife conflicts.

"Through our Master Hunter Permit Program, WDFW enlists skilled volunteers who are passionate about wildlife conservation and supporting both the Department and the public,” said David Whipple, WDFW hunter education section manager. “Applicants must demonstrate a high level of hunting knowledge, skills, and abilities, and be deeply committed to lawful and ethical hunting practices."

Applicants must complete all certification requirements by May 15, 2026. Requirements include passing a written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher, undergoing a criminal background check, completing a shooting proficiency test, and fulfilling volunteer service hours. The application fee is $69.

Whipple advised applicants to study thoroughly before taking the exam. Candidates may attempt the test only twice per year. Those who fail both attempts must wait until the next application cycle to reapply.

Master hunters collectively contribute approximately 15,000 volunteer hours each year toward education and conservation programs, including work involving game species and threatened or endangered wildlife. In certain situations, WDFW also calls on master hunters to help manage human-wildlife conflicts.

Information about eligibility requirements, certification steps, and exam materials is available on the WDFW website. Interested individuals can find more details on the Master Hunter Exam webpage.
