PULLMAN — The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is launching enhanced enforcement patrols targeting unsafe driving behaviors during the Washington State University (WSU) Thanksgiving break.
The increased patrols will run from November 21 through December 1, focusing on major travel routes used by students heading home for the holiday. Troopers will maintain heightened presence along State Routes 26 and 195, as well as Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass.
Law enforcement officials will concentrate on several key violations, including speeding, driving too fast for conditions, distracted driving, and impaired driving. The operation will span multiple jurisdictions, with WSP Districts 4 and 6 coordinating efforts across Spokane, Whitman, Adams, Grant, and Kittitas counties.
"We appreciate everyone's help and diligence to ensure that we have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving this year," said WSP District 4 Commander Captain Jeff Otis.
The patrol is urging students to prepare their vehicles for winter travel conditions. Officials recommend carrying emergency kits containing water, food, blankets, winter clothing, and emergency flares. Drivers are also advised to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained with full fluid levels and reliable batteries.
The WSP emphasized the importance of appropriate tire equipment, noting that all-season or snow tires, along with tire chains, may be mandatory for mountain pass travel. Motorists are encouraged to monitor road and weather conditions through the Washington State Department of Transportation's website and mobile applications before embarking on their journeys.
The initiative represents a coordinated effort between the WSP, WSU, and other state and local officials to ensure safe holiday travel for the university community.
