Leavenworth golf course again transforms into winter recreation hub

LEAVENWORTH — After a long-awaited arrival of snow in the Icicle Valley, winter recreation has returned for the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club (LWSC). With it, is a community partnership going on 44 years.

Since 1982, LWSC and the Leavenworth Golf Club have worked together to transform the off-season golf course into an establishment for winter recreation. Both organizations have deep roots in the area: the golf course was founded in 1927, followed by LWSC in 1928. The recreation site has broadened its winter experience over the years, starting with Nordic ski trails, and later adding sledding, snowshoeing and fat biking.

“This cross‑pollination strengthens membership, volunteerism, participation, and community support for both groups…[It] expands year‑round recreational opportunities by activating the golf course during winter months…while leveraging existing facilities for youth programs and community events,” said Leavenworth Golf Club General Manager and Head Golf Professional Ed Quick.

Quick added that the increased winter visitation not only helps reinforce Leavenworth’s identity as a four-season destination, but directly supports the Pub at the Club. For recreators, the indoor space offers a place to warm up, gather, eat a snack, or grab a hot cocoa.

“This year, we’re especially grateful for the improvements the golf course has made to enhance the winter experience,” said Murray Bartholomew, executive director of LWSC. “The indoor space is a big upgrade and makes it much easier for families and friends to relax, warm up, and keep the day going.”

According to LWSC, sledding at the golf course has a long run-out for speed chasers to slow to a stop. The designated area also helps preserve the Nordic ski trails and surrounding landscape.

This winter, LWSC is offering locals 20 percent off sledding tickets on Fridays. The golf course hosts happy hour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sledding is offered Thursday through Monday from 11a.m. to 6 p.m. The Pub at the Club is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
